Gilas Pilipinas failed to advance to the second round of the FIBA World Cup 2023 after getting their third loss in a game against Italy, 83-90, at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum on Tuesday night.

Despite Gilas’ dominance in the first quarter, 23-20, Italy fought back by giving numerous strong offenses in the second quarter as Filipino players struggled with their defense, which made them surpass Gilas by 9 points, 39-48.

With hopes of reclaiming the lead from Italy, Gilas made plenty of comeback attempts in the third and fourth quarters but their efforts fell short, as the game ended with them seven points behind the Italian shooters.

Following the third defeat of Gilas—first to the Dominican Republic and second to Angola—they will now head to the classification round, where they will face the two bottom teams from Group B [1].

“[It was a] tough game, but I think we competed in all three games. We came out here and gave our best efforts trying to figure out these games and get wins,” said Clarkson, the leading scorer of Gilas with 23 points, seven rebounds, and six assists [2].

Meanwhile, Italy will advance to the second round as the second seed in Group A, behind the Dominican Republic [3].
