Chinese tech giant Tencent remained tight-lipped about its intentions to develop a mobile rendition of the famed game "Elden Ring" earlier this February 6.

Released in 2022 for $60, "Elden Ring" quickly sold a staggering 20 million copies in its first year, becoming the world's second best-selling game. Even billionaire Elon Musk is a fan.

Licensing big games like "Elden Ring" often involves royalty fees of 15-20% of sales, plus platform fees like Apple's hefty 30% cut, according to Reuters. These costs can eat into profits, especially for free-to-play models reliant on in-app purchases.

Despite its premium design, Tencent reportedly wants to make "Elden Ring" free-to-play, similar to the hugely successful "Genshin Impact" by Chinese rival miHoYo. However, the path to mobile success isn’t paved with gold.

"Gaming is our core business... But in the past year, we've faced significant challenges," admitted Tencent CEO and co-founder Pony Ma at the company's recent annual meeting in Shenzhen.

With the massive success of PUBG Mobile compared to the lackluster performance of recent Tencent mobile games, the company seems cautious about its strategy and monetization plans for future projects.
