Chris Martin, the frontman of the British rock band Coldplay, has announced that the band will retire after releasing their 12th studio album in 2025, explaining that they want to keep their discography limited to 12 albums to maintain high quality in their music.
In an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Martin said, “We are only going to do 12 proper albums, and that’s real.”
Emphasizing that less is more, he added, “Having that limit means the quality control is so high right now, and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great.”
He revealed that other artists have inspired them to limit the band’s discography, saying that it’s important for them to minimize their releases.
"There’s only seven Harry Potters. There’s only 12-and-a-half Beatles’ albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley, so all our heroes,” he explained.
Martin also mentioned that he wants his bandmates—Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion—to explore their own lives outside Coldplay after retirement.
He said, “I want to give the others some of their life for themselves,” and hinted that they might also pursue solo projects in the future.
Recently, the band released their 10th studio album, “Moon Music,” on October 4, 2024.
