British singer and composer Liam Payne, who meteorically rose to stardom as a prominent member of the boy band One Direction, was found dead after falling from the balcony of his third-floor room in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Wednesday, October 16.
In the police report released by Buenos Aires officials, Payne, 31 years old, suffered from extreme injuries due to his fall from his room in the Casa Sur Hotel and was declared dead on the spot.
Minutes before the accident, the manager of the hotel heard an extreme noise coming from the inner courtyard and described Payne as an "aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol," which is evident in his destructive behavior, including the devastation of the room he was staying in.
"A guest who is overwhelmed with drugs and alcohol ... He’s destroying the entire room and, well, we need you to send someone, please," the hotel manager mentioned in a 911 call.
While there is still no clear reason behind his death, Payne boldly spoke about his mental health problems and struggles with fame, which led to his alcoholism in the past.
Payne mentioned that he had a hard time adjusting to the public after his rapid rise to fame.
“I don’t think you can ever deal with that, it’s all a bit crazy for us to see that people get in that sort of state of mind about us and what we do,” he said in an interview in 2013.
His girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, whom he had a trip with, stated that they only planned to stay in Argentina for five days but ended up visiting for two weeks. That was why Cassidy departed for Miami two days earlier than the incident, leaving Payne behind.
"Directioners" and fans of Payne came rushing to the place of the incident and scattered around the cordoned-off street when they heard the news. Words of grief also filled the internet upon the sudden death of the renowned singer.
Following his death, Payne had left his 7-year-old son, Bear Grey Payne, with his former girlfriend Cheryl Cole, fatherless.
Payne was a huge part of the phenomenal boy band One Direction's success in the 2010s, which was a product of the British program "The X Factor." Since then, he, together with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan, became a global sensation. They captured the hearts of many teenagers, mostly girls, with their hits like "What Makes You Beautiful," "Night Changes," and "Story of My Life."
Just like the other members, Payne also made hits after the band had disbanded in 2016 to pursue individual opportunities. He debuted as a solo artist with "Strip That Down" as his single in 2017, featuring American rapper Quavo, and also released an album called "LP1" in 2019. His last single, which was published in March, was called "Teardrops."
