260-year-old string Trio composition from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart recently surfaced in an excavated library in Lepzeig, Germany, and premiered on Thursday night, September 19, in Salzburg, Mozart's hometown.
The piece has been referred to as “Ganz kleine Nachtmusik” or “Quiet little night music”, and is believed that it was more likely written in mid-to-late-1760s, before his trip to Italy, and is composed of seven miniature movements, written in C major for two violins, and bass, for a total runtime of 12 minutes, and has been cataloged in KΓΆchel as KV 648.
In addition, the definitive catalog of Mozart's works, last updated in 1964, has undergone a decade-long revision, highlighting the importance of meticulous cataloging in understanding his contributions to music.
According to Ulrich Leisinger, head of research at the International Mozarteum Foundation and editor of the latest version of KΓΆchel, the composition is a significant piece in the mosaic in Mozart’s music. He added that his sister preserved the work of his brother, that he perhaps wrote the Trio specially for her and for her name day.
Furthermore, his father, Leopold Mozart, made a list of Wolfgang’s music that included “many other chamber compositions,” which many historians believed to have been lost to time.
With huge excitement, Ganz kleine Nachtmusik received its German premiere at the Leipzig Opera, outside the opera house with fans eager to hear the performance. It was played by graduates of the Johann Sebastian Bach Music School.
