During the 2024 Regional Conference on Educational Planning in Asia on Monday, November 4, Department of Education Secretary Sonny Angara announced that DepEd plans to reduce core subjects in the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum to allow learners to focus more on work immersion.

DepEd officials have already engaged with academic experts to fast-track the review and simplification of the SHS program and its subjects.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) focused on providing recommendations for the structure of the SHS curriculum, along with the content for the English, Science, and Math standards and curriculum guides.

DepEd also worked with ADB to offer technical assistance and expert guidance to education specialists in changing the SHS curriculum.

Angara suggested that the system should allow for flexibility that cutting down the number of subjects in the Senior High School curriculum would provide students with more time for work immersion.

"So, we’re heading in the right direction to narrow down the core subjects of our SHS curriculum to just five or six," he stated.

He also added that the basic education curriculum in the country is already overloaded, based on insights from education experts from other countries.

Meanwhile, the K to 10 curriculum, which focuses on literacy and math skills, is being implemented in phases until 2025.

Under former DepEd Secretary and Vice President Sara Duterte, DepEd stated that the revised SHS curriculum will be implemented in 2025.
