As of January 17, at least 27 people are dead, 31 are missing, and over 205,000 residents have been evacuated as wildfires in Los Angeles intensifies, destroying more than 12,400 structures and leaving widespread devastation across the region.

The Palisades fires, which started on January 7, has burned more than 17,200 acres and 27% contained. Despite some progress as winds have weakened, the fire still poses a major threat.

Meanwhile, the Eaton Fire in Altadena has also caused significant damage, contributing to the high number of destroyed structures.

Following the fires, mudslide concerns have surfaced. A $2 million oceanfront home in Pacific Palisades, which survived the flames, was destroyed by a mudslide caused by runoff from firefighting efforts and an unstable hillside.

Governor Gavin Newsom has shifted focus from legal initiatives against the incoming Trump administration to addressing the wildfires. Despite criticism from President Trump, Newsom has proposed a $2.5 billion relief and preparedness plan to tackle the crisis.

The red flag warnings for the Western San Gabriel Mountains, Santa Susana Mountains, and I-5 Corridor have been lifted, as more favorable weather is expected in Los Angeles County through the weekend.

Although the weakened winds have brought some relief, the National Weather Service cautions that hazardous conditions are predicted for next week. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow evacuation orders as firefighters persist in their efforts to control the fires.
