American tennis prodigy Madison Keys engraved her name in tennis history at the Australian Open after winning her first Grand Slam on Saturday, January 25, after outplaying two-time defending champion, Aryna Sabalenka.

The achievement not only gave her the title of the Grand Slam Champion, but also the title of the oldest first-time Grand Slam winner in history.

In a shocking turn of events, Keys, the No. 19 seed, shocked the tennis fans by defeating Sabalenka, the No. 1 seed with scores 6-3, 2-6, and 7-5.

She ruled the match, kicking off with her astounding serving skills on the first set, progressing into strategic battle on the second set, and finishing the game with a show-stopping finale that shocked the tennis community.

Keys now becomes the 3rd American Women’s player to win a grand slam tournament, following in the footsteps of Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open winner and Coco Gauff, the 2023 U.S Open winner.

She has now won back-to-back tournaments to start the year. Keys stepped into the Australian Open in the aftermath of winning the Adelaide International.

As stated by Keys, “I didn’t need it to feel I had a good career or that I deserved to be talked about as a great player. Finally letting go of that internal talk gave me the ability to go out and play some really good tennis to win a grand slam.”

Keys was overwhelmed with emotions and started crying with her team, husband, and coach Bjorn Fratangelo who were located in the stands.

Sabalenka, who has been aspiring to be the first woman in 26 years to achieve three consecutive Australian Open titles, was left dumbfounded and smashed her racket on the floor due to frustration but she then went on to Keys to congratulate her on winning.
