Meralco Bolts import Akil Mitchell reassured fans that his back injury is not serious and expects to be ready for the PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoffs despite a recent flare-up of a herniated disk from last season.
“I had a herniated disk in my back last season, and it just flared up,” Mitchell said.
He took time to rest after the practice setback earlier in the week to ensure he is in optimal condition for the playoffs.
However, this Mitchell’s first injury this season. In December 2024, he suffered a broken nose in a game against Rain or Shine after taking an accidental elbow to the face, which required surgery.
Meralco head coach Luigi Trillo expressed confidence in Mitchell’s resilience. “We believe in Akil. Even with one leg, he’ll play,” Trillo stated.
Trillo also noted that playing without a protective mask after his nose injury would be an advantage for Mitchell.
Meralco’s management continues to support Mitchell’s recovery, prioritizing his health while ensuring the team remains competitive. As the playoffs begin, all eyes will be on Mitchell’s return and its impact on the Bolts’ championship aspirations.
