Being socially unaware is one of the reasons why Filipinos are easily fooled by some candidates running for positions in politics. We tend to ignore things that are happening around us that can result in many negative outcomes that can affect the younger generations.
TV Host and Comedian Vice Ganda couldn't avoid being bothered by Sexy Babe contestant Heart Aquino's response to her question; “Ano ang masasabi mo sa COMELEC” (What is your message to COMELEC). The contestant then answered that she is not familiar with the Constitutional COMELEC that prompted a surprised reaction from the hosts especially Vice Ganda. “Oh my gosh, that is bothersome” Vice Ganda stated upon knowing that the candidate is in her 20's and yet still not familiar with the COMELEC. For someone under the age of 20, it is expected that you must be familiar with these things since COMELEC is the one that ensures the conduct of free, fair, and honest elections.
Kim Chiu, one of the co-host then asked the candidate if she was already a voter to which she answered “not yet”. The disbelief was still evident on Vice Ganda that she even chipped in to say, “So paano? Wala kang sagot?” (So you don't have any answer?) And continued asking; “Wala ka bang naririnig? Hindi ka ba nanonood ng telebisyon? Nagbabasa ng dyaryo? Internet?” (Don't you hear anything about it? Don't you watch television? Read the newspaper? Internet?) “Hindi rin po masyadong nalabas sa newsfeed ko” (No, it does not appear on my news feed). The contestant responded. Kim Chiu then said that she should be at least familiar with it through her school. It is very alarming that someone who is an aspiring beauty queen is not even familiar with the agency that handles the elections. Especially that these types of people are mostly the target of some politicians. Social media is a very convenient tool for everyone to search about issues happening around us. It does not hurt taking the time to watch the news, read articles, because things that happen inside the country are serious.
This issue became trending and caused a mixed reaction from the netizens that some of the comments are defending the contestant that it is not a big deal to be unfamiliar in politics since most of them do not even like politics because of the elected leaders since being politically aware will not change the fact of corruption in the Philippines because of the elected leaders. This proves how ignorant Filipinos are; with some Filipinos lacking knowledge in politics is one of the reasons why we keep on electing non-qualified leaders.
Furthermore, Vice Ganda then again asked the contestant “So sino may kasalanan na ʻdi ka informed?” (So whose fault is it that you are not informed about the COMELEC?) as the contestant laughed and answered, “Ako po." The contestant tried answering the question saying that the elections must be fair since the Filipinos deserve to have leaders that will aim for the betterment of the Philippines.
Being politically, and socially aware even if you hate the elected leaders can stop the never-ending cycle of electing non-qualified leaders. With this, we can contribute to the success of the Philippines that will affect the future generations. We must take our time to watch the news, or browse through social media about the happenings in our country because increasing our knowledge about these issues can be valuable in the future.
