FEATURE: What’s in Silent Sanctuary and December Avenue?

By: Venus Bomediano

SILENT SANCTUARY

Silent Sanctuary is a 5-piece Filipino rock band that was formed in Metro Manila, Philippines in 2001. Five studio albums have been released by the band throughout its career.

Currently comprises of Sarkie Sarangay on guitars and vocals, Chino David on violin and backup vocals, Anjo Inacay on cello, Jason Rondero bass and backup vocals, and Allen Calixto on drums, Silent Sanctuary was formed in 2001. Since Blink 182-ish bands were “in” that time, the band was originally founded by only three members---vocalist/guitarist, bassist/backup vocalist, and drummer. However, as they grew, the boys experimented in their music by mixing in more string instruments, cello and violin—to make a more unique sound. It took the band three years before they were able to release a full-length record. Titled Ellipsis of the Mind, the album was independently produced.
Silent Sanctuary means “a place of refuge” where you can find comfort and strength. They are very popular in music industry, because of their songs which got the taste of every Filipino. “Rebound”, “Ikaw Lamang”, and “Kundiman” are the songs included in their first album. Those songs became remarkable to the people, especially to the youth in our generation. Their songs have sweet and smooth melody, most of their songs are love songs that entice the listeners who could really relate to their lyrics.
Through the years, Silent Sanctuary has never been silent. They are continuously seen and heard on live gigs, concerts, music channels, and radio stations.

DECEMBER AVENUE

December Avenue, the alternative and indie band consisting of Zel Bautista, Jem Manuel, Don Gregorio, Jet Danao, and Gelo Cruz.

Their band has been serenading Filipino music fans for almost a decade now, with their songs that simply touch hearts. And if you learn about the story behind the band’s name, it won’t be difficult to understand why their songs have such a feel.
“December Avenue” represents our songs, the meaning of our songs. Our songs mostly talk about life, moving on, and December is actually the last month of the year which is an avenue towards the new year which is a “new life”, shared by the band’s lead vocalist Bautista.
Their music’s focus lies in their song’s lyrics, and they always think about their listeners whenever they write songs. As for one of their most popular songs “Eroplanong Papel” (Paper Airplane) the band said that it’s open for interpretation, but pointed out that it’s generally about prayer.
The members of December Avenue have a piece of advice worth remembering. “Just keep it real. Respect one another.” For them, they said that calling themselves as friends before a band is really the secret why they’ve stayed together all the while producing beautiful Filipino music they can be proud to play in front of anyone.
