FEATURE: Exclusion Zone of Chernobyl by: Allen Paolo M. Mirondo

Thirty-five years ago, a city called Pripyat located in Northern Ukraine was left abandoned and became radioactive after the world's worst nuclear accident occurred.

The incident took place in 1986 after reactor no. 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded. The ghost town of Pripyat with over 50,000 residents and some parts of Europe remain radioactive, causing 300,000 citizens to permanently vacate their motherland and leave the city uninhabitable.

According to National Geographic, the incident had been estimated to cost some $235 billion in damages.

The Chernobyl disaster has drastically changed the lives of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people. Despite the risk, scientists and researchers are coming back to study the effects of radiation on wildlife.
