On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion inside Ukraine’s border by Russian military forces. Ever since the date of the said invasion, the conflict between the two countries is still ongoing and may probably face escalation.
As of now, Russia is currently pushing to invade and seize southern Ukraine causing nearby countries to express concern. As the Russian Armed Forces invade Southern Ukraine, they are also nearing Moldova.
Due to the said invasion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenzskyy warns nearby countries that Moscow wants to “capture other countries” and that Ukraine was probably just their first step in achieving this.
Going back to the ongoing crisis, Russia is now seeking to starve out the remaining defenders and civilians in Mariupol’s Azovstal Steel Plant. Inside the facility, there lies the city’s last remaining Ukrainian fighters.
Mariupol is a part of the industrial region in eastern Ukraine and is one of the major port and prized industrial assets of the country. If the city is captured by Russian armed troops, this would allow the establishment of a land corridor from Russia’s border to Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula that Moscow annexed way back 2014.
