UST Golden Tigresses claimed their sixth V-League Women’s Collegiate Challenge championship on October 4, ending a 14-year drought by defeating the FEU Lady Tamaraws in the finals at Philsports Arena.
Following their victory over the FEU Lady Tamaraws, the UST Golden Tigresses won the 2024 V-League Women's Collegiate Challenge, their first since 2010 and their sixth league championship overall.
The Tigresses defeated the Lady Tamaraws 2-1 in the finals, almost making up for their tragic Game 2 loss, in which they rejoiced too soon and were defeated 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 19-25, and 17-15, forcing a single elimination game.
Even so, UST ensured that triumph and its first major title would not be denied this time around, having won everything in the V-League and UAAP Season 72 fourteen years earlier.
"Masaya ‘yong grupo, at least nakarecover kami from an upset loss doon sa Game 2. Masaya rin kasi kumpleto ‘yong grupo namin bukod kay Em (Banagua). Naexperience ulit namin na magchampion dito sa V-League, kaya overwhelming yung tuwa na nararamdaman namin," said Kungfu Reyes, the head coach of UST.
After missing Game 2 due to illness, UST greatly depended on MVP Angge Poyos's return. With 31 points on 29 attacks, two blocks, and eight great receptions in Game 3, Poyos made her mark.
UST had the momentum they sought to take control of the fourth set after defeating the Tamaraws in the third set, which was dominated by Poyos and Jurado.
Meanwhile, despite their hard-fought battles throughout the series, the Lady Tamaraws acknowledged their defeat with grace. “We gave it our all, but UST was just the better team today. We’ll take this experience as motivation to come back stronger next season,” shared FEU’s captain, Janelle Montejo.
The Golden Tigresses sealed the match and the championship with consecutive spikes from Jurado and a quick hit by Pia Abbu, securing a 25-14 victory in the final set.
