The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) voiced concern over the Senate’s continued postponement of the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, stressing the importance of upholding accountability as highlighted on Tuesday, July 08, during their 130th Plenary Assembly.
“We are troubled by the Senate’s inaction in fulfilling its constitutional duty regarding the impeachment process of the Vice President,” the CBCP stated in a pastoral letter released on Tuesday.
The bishops emphasized that impeachment, when pursued with integrity and fairness, serves as a valid democratic tool to promote transparency and responsible governance.
CBCP also called on the faithful to nurture a culture grounded in Christian values, encouraging them to hear both sides of the issue with openness and discernment.
Meanwhile, CBCP President Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David warned that any further delay in the proceedings would undermine the 1987 Constitution and betray the trust of the public.
On the other hand, Senate impeachment court spokesperson Regie Tongol firmly stated that the Senate has taken concrete procedural actions. The current holdups stem from required certifications and formal entries that the House has yet to file—not from any intentional slow-walking by the impeachment court.
