FEATURE: :"'No Way Home' hits home" by Eric Paulin

After being delayed for almost a month in the Philippines, the third installment to Marvel's Spider-Man trilogy, No Way Home, finally arrives in the local multiplex. It breaks record globally for being the highest grossing film in 2021 and now, Filipino fans are helping push that even further.

No Way Home sees the return of Tom Holland as the titular character while directly starting off from where the prequel, Far From Home, ended. With Mysterio revealing Spider-Man's real identity, Peter Parker is caught in a whirlpool of mayhem. On top of this, he and his girlfriend MJ and bestfriend Ned are being denied from college applications due to the scandals they are alleged to be involved in. Parker tries to fix these with the help of Doctor Strange, however, things go astray. Characters from the multiverse start appearing, particularly the villains we have known from both the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb Spider-Man films.

As promised in the trailers, we are once again introduced to old villains Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Sandman, Electro, and The Lizard. Will the two Spider-Men played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appear in the movie too?

The plot of the movie is pretty straightforward. The shady villains from the previous movies are grounded here as we get to know more about their internal motivations. There characterizations are humanized and the movie portrays them as sympathetic. In the climax, the villains return to their wicked selves as perfectly described in one line of the movie: “When you try to fix someone, there are consequences.”

No Way Home is nothing short of nostalgia. With classic Spider-Man characters reprising their roles from years after, this unprecedented cinematic event in itself is already a homerun. It's a unifying experience, bringing together a fandom from various generations. Despite the second act being a little dragging, No Way Home still delivers an impactful action and a very dramatic denouement. Audience reactions are proof enough that this movie hits home in different levels: nostalgia, entertainment, and heart.

The movie concludes with a very difficult decision to be made where repercussions would impact Peter's life in all levels. The ending also opens fresh opportunities for the future of our friendly neighborhood web slinger.

The movie has two post-credit scene, one being the teaser trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which has then been released online.
